New York, Alabama and Colorado

June 2004

We like to visit the US in the summer. In 2004, by dint of careful experimentation on Expedia, I managed to construct a multi-leg journey that passed through a ridiculous number of states. Besides the three mentioned above, we saw Connecticut, Tennessee, Texas and Illinois.

First up, New York, with our gracious hosts katre and Duchess.

And when I say "gracious", I'm not messing around. We're talking homemade cinnamon buns here.

Connecticut wasn't on our itinerary, but katre and Duchess drove us up there to visit Duchess' cousin at Yale. We were glad they did because it was an extremely scenic ride. Connecticut in general seems to have an awful lot of trees, and Yale has some imposing architecture to go with them.

I can't tell if this is stained glass, but it should be.

On the way back, we stopped in Mystic for a taste of some good old tacky seaside resort, American style. This is an art form Storme and I both appreciate (as witness the number of times we've been to the Isle of Wight), and I have to say that Mystic is a really pleasant little place.

Maybe just a bit tacky.

Mystic has boats, also.

More boats. There were also cute little knick-knack shops and the like, many with punning references to the word "mystic" in their names; plus we had a great Mexican lunch with veek and Ethan. But I just took pictures of the boats, sorry.

Oh, and cats. This is Lindy.

We're back in New York now. Lindy is fascinated by Storme's camera, or more specifically by the magical dangly string that's attached to it.

String!!!

You may think this is a lot of pictures to take of a cat, but I took a lot more than this, believe me.

We did manage to tear ourselves away and see New York itself a few times, though. The fantastic weather certainly helped. I love this weird dappled cloud formation.

With weather like this, where else to be but Central Park?

New York does not actually have a lot of parks, but what they lack in quantity they make up for in quality. It's amazing that such a huge and beautiful park has been preserved in the middle of one of the densest urban areas on the planet, leading to spectacular skylines like this.

There are secluded nooks, also.

Another weakness of ours is cute squirrels, but we managed to keep it down to just one squirrel this time.

Apart from the tourism shown above, we had an exceptionally drunken night out with LJ friend Kirsten, thankfully without documentary evidence. And then we got on a plane to... Alabama!
